Most Artists Don’t Have a Talent Problem

Every artist I’ve ever worked with has a version of the same voice living inside them.

It tells them they’re not good enough.
    Not ready enough.
Not talented enough, consistent enough, disciplined enough.

    It whispers:
“Who do you think you are?”
    “You’re going to fail.”
“Everyone else knows what they’re doing except you.”

I call this voice Not Enough.

And after two decades of working with thousands of artists, here’s what I know:

    You can’t outrun Not Enough.
    You can’t ignore it away.
And pretending it doesn’t exist only makes it louder.

But you can give it a voice.

Years ago, when I was standing at the edge of the biggest decision of my life — leaving my successful career as an international art dealer to move to France and become a working artist — I was paralyzed.

    Everyone thought I was crazy.
Honestly, I thought I was crazy too.

My therapist gave me unusual advice:

“Write a letter from Not Enough.”

    So I did.

    Dear Crista,

I am Not Enough, and this is what I want to tell you:

Are you out of your mind? You have a beautiful life and an incredible career.

I’m afraid you’ll never be truly happy, and this wild leap will destroy everything you’ve built.

I’m scared to trust you… and even more scared you might be right.

What are we going to do in France, Crista? You don’t even speak the language.

I know you want to get rid of me. But I’m only trying to help you, you know.

    Love,

    Not Enough

    Reading those words changed everything.

Because suddenly I could see that Not Enough wasn’t trying to sabotage me.

It was trying to protect me.

Not Enough is never about your skills.

    It’s about visibility.
    Risk.
    Loss.
    Change.

It’s the part of you that’s terrified of wanting more — because wanting more means you might lose something.

    ⭐ Here’s the exercise:

    Take 10 minutes.
    Write quickly.
    Don’t think, don’t edit, don’t judge.

    Write:

    Dear [Your Name],

I am Not Enough, and this is what I want to tell you:

    Then let it pour.

    What you’ll discover:

Not Enough is rarely talking about art at all.

    It’s talking about your heart.
    Your history.
    Your wounds.
    Your longing.
Your desire to become someone bigger than you were told you were allowed to be.

Once you understand what Not Enough is trying to protect you from, you can finally have a real conversation with it.

    You can thank it.
    You can reassure it.
And you can choose your next step consciously — not reactively.

This is the real work, Crista.

    Not pretending you’re fearless.
Not waiting until the fear disappears.

But learning to move with Not Enough beside you — instead of letting it drive the car.

⭐ Inside The Working Artist Academy, this is what we do together.

We look at the deeper questions — the ones that actually stop artists:

What am I afraid will happen if I succeed?

What part of me is still trying to stay safe?

What story am I secretly obeying?

Because the artists who build sustainable careers aren’t the ones without fear or self-doubt.

They’re the ones who learn to listen, understand, and take action anyway.

    Try the exercise.

See what Not Enough wants to tell you.

You may be shocked by what you discover — and relieved, and softened, and strangely empowered.
