Why I Built the Working Artist Academy

I want to take a moment to explain—plainly and directly—what the Working Artist Academy is, and why I built it.

Photo of Crista Cloutier in blue background, sharing why she built the working artist academy

For most of my career, I worked inside the contemporary art world as a dealer, curator, and gallerist.

I watched talented artists struggle not because their work wasn’t strong, but because no one ever taught them how the system actually works — how decisions get made, how opportunities form, how careers are sustained over time.

Over the last decade, that gap has only widened.

The art world has changed. Gatekeepers have fewer resources. Paths that once felt clear now feel opaque or unstable.

Artists are told to “be visible,” “build an audience,” or “just keep going,” without being given a framework that actually helps them make grounded decisions.

The Working Artist Academy exists to change that.

This is not a motivational program. It’s not about working harder or producing more. And it’s not a collection of random tips or tactics.

The Academy is a structured learning environment designed to help artists understand:

    • how the art world functions now
    • how to position their work clearly
    • how to make informed choices instead of guessing
    • how to build a working life that is sustainable, not exhausting

Everything in the Academy is intentional and sequential. Each part builds on the last.

The goal is clarity — so that you can stop second-guessing yourself and start moving forward with confidence.

If you’ve ever felt like you were missing a map…

If you’ve ever wondered why effort didn’t seem to translate into traction…

If you’re ready to take responsibility for your working life without losing your integrity as an artist…

That’s who this was built for.

I’ll be present throughout the Academy, guiding the process and teaching from the experience I’ve gained on both sides of the art world.

In the days ahead, I’ll share more details about how the program works, what participation looks like, and how support is structured.

For now, I wanted you to understand the heart of it.

This isn’t about promising outcomes. It’s about giving artists the clarity they were never offered — and the structure to move forward with support and intention.

    More soon,

    Crista
